South Korea has the highest smoking rate among OECD countries, with around 40% of adult males being smokers. Despite the rise in tobacco prices and restrictions on smoking areas, quitting remains challenging, leaving many smokers in the country. This may be attributed to tobacco's reputation as one of the most addictive drugs, making it difficult to quit without significant willpower.
Surprisingly, statistics indicate that 80% of people who try a cigarette out of curiosity end up becoming regular smokers, while only about 4% of those attempting to quit succeed. However, a better understanding of cigarettes' true nature and awareness of the excellent smoking cessation support services in Korea, which are admired worldwide, can alter perceptions about the difficulty of quitting.
Professors Son Min and Seo Min-hee from Inha University's School of Nursing, along with Prof. Lee Hoon-jae from the School of Medicine, have been running specialized therapeutic smoking cessation camps for heavy smokers who have consumed more than 2 packs a day for decades. Remarkably, these camps achieve an impressive quit rate of nearly 80%. By learning from their experiences, you will gain valuable insights into the reality of 'cigarettes and cessation.'
